Brazil -Carl de Souza

A visual journey through Brazil’s culture, sport, and politics, seen through the lens of British photojournalist Carl de Souza, based on six years living and working in the country.

Carl de Souza is the Chief Photographer for AFP in Mexico, with 25 years of experience as a photojournalist. He previously served as AFP’s Chief Photographer for East Africa and worked in London before joining the agency’s international field assignments.

His career spans major global events including the funeral of Nelson Mandela and the wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton as well as extensive conflict coverage in Libya, South Sudan, Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Somalia, and Pakistan. In October 2007, he narrowly escaped a car bomb attack in Pakistan that killed nearly 150 people.

Carl de Souza has photographed world leaders, spiritual figures, and cultural icons, including the Dalai Lama, Queen Elizabeth II, several prime ministers, and Brazilian pop star Anitta. He has also covered two FIFA World Cups, three Olympic Games, and conflicts within the favelas of Rio de Janeiro. His photographs have appeared on the front pages of many of the world’s leading newspapers and magazines.
